Kitwe Land Alliance Decries Slow Investigations into Land Scandal

The Kitwe Land Alliance has expressed concern over the slow pace of investigations into a land scandal that rocked Kitwe District, which led to the suspension of the land agency amid allegations of corruption and malpractice involving land agents, administrators, and councillors.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Alliance Coordinator Felix Chipoya questioned why investigations have dragged on for more than four years without concrete outcomes.

Mr. Chipoya said that if individuals have been named in the illegal land dealings—whether administrators, private individuals, or councillors—the findings must be made public, and those responsible should face prosecution or receive heavy sanctions.

He emphasized that suspensions alone are not enough and urged authorities to take decisive and transparent action to address the matter.

Mr. Chipoya warned that without accountability and openness, the same problems will continue to plague the land administration sector.

On January 26, 2024, Government suspended the agency of Kitwe City Council to administer land on behalf of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources with immediate effect.

The then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Elijah Muchima, said the revocation was due to illegalities in land administration by the local authority.
