Residents of Mufulira’s Kawama East Township have expressed concern over rising poverty levels in the area, attributing the situation to the high cost of living and what they describe as limited government support.

Speaking in interviews with Mafken, several residents said vulnerable members of the community have not adequately benefited from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), despite submitting applications for assistance.

The residents claimed that access to CDF support remains unclear, with some stating that the fund feels “like a rumour” as they have not seen tangible benefits within the community.

They further cited delays in the installation of electricity in parts of the township, saying the prolonged process has negatively affected small-scale businesses and household livelihoods.

The community members have since called on government authorities and local leaders to ensure equitable distribution of development resources and timely implementation of infrastructure projects to support economic growth in the area.
