Prominent economist Lubinda Habazoka has predicted that the kwacha could strengthen to trade below 17 per US dollar this week.
Currently, the local currency is trading at 18.12 (buying) and 18.48 (selling) according to Stanbic Bank.
Recent exchange rate data shows the kwacha has been gaining ground, with the lowest rate recorded at 18.556 per dollar on February 12, 2026, compared to highs above 22 earlier in January.
A stronger kwacha is essential for the economy, as it helps reduce the cost of essentials such as fuel, which in turn lowers other prices across the market.
