DEC Raises Concern Over Rising Alcohol Abuse Among Women

By Morgan Chomba,

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Mufulira has expressed concern over the increasing number of women abusing alcohol, warning that the trend is contributing to rising cases of Gender-Based Violence in the district.

DEC Education and Investigations Officer Happy Sitwala Mebelo attributed excessive alcohol consumption among some women to a rise in domestic conflicts, which she said in many cases escalate into gender-based violence.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Mafken News, Ms. Mebelo urged community members, particularly women, to drink responsibly and seek support programmes aimed at reducing alcohol abuse and promoting peaceful homes.

She also called on families and community leaders to work together in addressing substance abuse as a way of curbing gender-based violence in the district.
